Cairo denies mummy was destroyed

The Egyptian Gazette

Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) yesterday denied that a team of Japanese archaeologists had destroyed a 3700-year-old mummy.SCA Secretary General Zahi Hawass said the report of the destruction of the mummy that was found in Saqqara, Giza, by archaeologists from the University of Waseda, was "untrue and baseless".The story was broadcast as part of a Japanese documentary."Investigations found out that because the mask was too big for the head, the space between the mask and the face was filled with linen," Hawass added."What was shown in the documentary was the archaeologists removing the linen, not destroying the mummy."
