Prof. Dr. Joachim Friedrich Quack, Director of the Institute of Egyptology at the University of Heidelberg and member of the Cluster “Asia and Europe”, has been awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
This was announced by the DFG on Thursday (2 December 2010). The award, which is the foremost distinction presented for research in Germany, comes with a purse of 2.5 million euros, with the purpose of financing future research projects by the Heidelberg scholar.
Prof. Quack is being honoured as one of the “world’s most eminent Egyptologists from Germany”, according to the DFG. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has announced four women and six men as the award winners for the year 2011. Prof. Quack is the sole recipient from the social sciences and humanities. The prize giving ceremony will take place in March 2011 in Berlin.
