Exhibition: Tutankhamun at London's Dome?
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-2517951,00.html
Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of Pharaohs, the travelling exhibition currently touring the States, is also planned to be shown in the UK, although potential problems with the proposed venue, the Greenwich Dome, has cast doubts on this plan in the past. Now, new concerns are emerging from Egypt: "Plans for a grand exhibition of the teenage pharaoh’s treasures at the venue have been thrown into doubt because Egyptian officials will not allow the artefacts to be displayed next to a proposed casino. The dome’s owner is hoping to be granted a licence for Britain’s first Las Vegas-style gambling venue next month. However, Cairo’s most senior antiquities official has described such a move as a 'disaster', claiming this weekend that it would 'insult the dignity” of Tutankhamun.'
See the above article for the full story. It actually remains to be seen whether or not The Dome is actually in business by the time the exhibition is to come to the UK, never mind if it is a casino or not. For more about the future of the Dome, and the possible impact on the UK visit of the exhibition, see another Times Online article dating to September 2006:
