Part of avenue of Sphinxes discovered at Saqqara

The SCA have announced that a team of Egyptian archaeologists have found a part of an ancient avenue of Sphinxes at Saqqara. According to the information released by the SCA the avenue was entioned in Graecoroman manuscripts and other documents which were found near the Serapeum, a nearby funerary complex in which sacred bulls were interred. The avenue dates to the Ptolemaic period and was discovered during recent excavations in that part of Saqqara.

Un equipo de arqueólogos egipcios ha descubierto una parte de un camino antiguo llamado "avenida de las Esfinges" en la zona arqueológica de Saqara, a 20 kilómetros al sur de El Cairo, anunció hoy el Consejo Supremo de Antigüedades (CSA).

Según un comunicado del CSA, esa avenida fue mencionada en manuscritos del periodo grecorromano (332 a.C-395 d.C) y en otros documentos que aparecieron anteriormente cerca del Serapeum, un complejo funerario cercano en el que eran sepultadas momias de toros sagrados.

Un nuevo segmento de esta avenida, que data del periodo ptolomeico (332 a.C-30 d.C), fue hallado durante una excavaciones recientes en la zona, explicó el secretario general del CSA, Zahi Hawass.
