Daily Photo: Qubbat al-Hawa
I'm still in my March 2007 file, so here are some pictures of Qubbat al-Hawa, the site of Old and Middle Kingdom tombs at Aswan, on the west bank of the Nile. The two tombs shown here both date to the Middle Kingdom.
The most conspicuous feature of the above photograph is probably the feature at the very top of the hill. this is the tomb of Sidi ali Bin Al-Hawa, a local holy man. However, the real treasures are the tombs of the officials of Elephantine which date to both the Old and Middle Kingdoms, which are visible in this photograph as the small dark rectangles built into the side of the hill. There are over 80 tombs carved into the sandstone, and some of them are remarkable for their architecture, the preservation of their colour and the charm of the art work.
