Egyptian Math Problems

Let's Play Math! (Denise)
This is a blog devoted to mathematical problems. This rent post on the blog takes a problem from the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus:

This week’s page from my old newsletter contains a math “magic trick” from the Rhind papyrus and three Egyptian calculations to translate and solve. As a bonus, I have thrown in one of my Math Club students’ favorite games. Enjoy! Egyptian math puzzles (pdf, 53KB)

To solve these puzzles, you will need to know how to translate Egyptian hieroglyphs and how to do the Egyptian scribe’s method of multiplication. If you missed them, here are the earlier posts in this series:

Alexandria Jones and the thief in the night
Not essential, but sets the stage for the later story.

How to multiply the Egyptian way.
