Reviews: The Mummy Who Would Be King

A summary of yesterday's programme, shown in the US: "The Mummy Who Would Be King is a clever title that sets the tone for an engaging Nova documentary that mixes history, drama, comedy and a dash of farce. It also illustrates the absurdly dominating role simple coincidence can play in both history and the discovery of history. The title mummy's almost-certain identity is kept from the viewer until late in the show, but if you saw the news a few years ago, you know. The mummy that is probably Rameses I was identified and returned to its rightful place in Egypt". See the above web page for the full story.

Another on the New York Times website: "It's a little indiscreet to gawk at this proud man's desiccated self, and all the peering and prodding may make you want to sign up pre-need for cremation. The discussions of embalming methods and the mummy's still-potent stench, festering over the eons, will darken your perceptions of bodily decay. (A resulting resolution for 2006: goodbye to beef jerky.) But the "Nova" treatment never seems as macabre or indiscreet as that mystifyingly popular "Bodies" exhibition of posed human specimens".
